Jobless Rate Climbs In Orange County

A new Hudson Valley casino could not have opened a a better time for neighboring Orange and Ulster counties, which both saw a rise in their unemployment rates in February, according to the state Labor Department.

Resorts World Catskills opened on Feb. 8 in Monticello, Sullivan County, several weeks ahead of schedule.

The luxury casino resort -- which cost $1.2 billion to build -- marked the occasion by welcoming thousands of guests to the gaming floor.

The jobless rate remained unchanged in Sullivan County at 5.9 percent in February, compared with February 2017, according to the latest jobs report from the state.

Orange County saw an increase with unemployment climbing to 5.3 percent in February from 4.9 percent in February 2017.

In Ulster County, its unemployment rose to 5.5 percent in February, up from 5.3 percent a year before. 

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 4.6 percent from 4.7 percent.
